The HAF Courier Driver Playbook

1. Prepare the van

A reliable day starts with a reliable van. Run the daily checklist: fuel, tyres, fluids, straps, PPE, chargers, paperwork. Two minutes in the yard saves an hour on the road.

2. Plan the day in time blocks

Break the day into blocks: collections, drops, driving, waiting, breaks and admin. Mark which time is bookable and which is committed. A day you can see is a day you can sell.

3. Price jobs properly

Set a minimum job price, a per-mile rate and an hourly waiting rate — and stick to them. Add surcharges for urgent same-day, evenings and weekends. If a job doesn’t cover the miles back, it isn’t priced — it’s guessed.

4. Cut wasted miles

Dead miles are the silent cost. Order your drops sensibly, look for return-leg loads before committing, and track empty mileage at the end of each day so you can see the pattern.

5. Handle waiting time

Agree waiting terms before the job: how long is included, what the hourly rate is after that. Log it as it happens — not from memory at invoice time.

6. Protect the goods

Use rated ratchet straps, check anchor points, protect edges and corners, and never stack beyond what the load can take. A secured load protects your goods, your van and your reputation.

7. Communicate like a pro

Confirm time windows in the morning, message before arrival, flag delays early. Customers forgive delays they hear about — not the ones they discover.

8. Track and calculate the day

At end of day, record jobs completed, total miles, revenue, fuel and other costs. Work out revenue per mile and per hour. That number tells you which days, routes and customers are worth keeping.
